Host with the Most! 2024 Holiday Hospitality Tips

November 01, 2024

Grab the hot cocoa (or eggnog if you prefer) and settle in for some easy, go-to holiday hosting tips! The holiday season is my absolute favorite time of the year because it's one where I get to spend time around those I love the most. Whether you are planning a holiday extravaganza or an intimate dinner, here are some of my favorite bits of advice as you begin prepping for the holiday season and all the special occasions ahead!

Create a tablescape.

A tablescape is the layout of the table that you will serve your meal, snacks, or treats on. Rather than simply just putting the dishes on the table, add some decor and fun details. Here is an easy guide to create a stunning tablescape for your next dinner:

1. Start with a table cloth, simple or with a design, you choose! This will set the stage for the rest of the table.

  • I have seen friends use thick, brown paper as their table cloth/runner so that they can actually write the on the paper to add labels and custom name placements.

2. Add a center piece.

  • For round or square tables, one large centerpiece
  • For long-tables, think of having a thin, but longer centerpiece
  • Use florals, candles, photos, pumpkins, Christmas trees, nativity scene, garland, ribbon, whatever supplies you have to create the centerpiece!

3. Have a specific dish for every food item!

  • Yes, it creates more dishes, but ditch the boxes and bags and put all the food items in a serving dish.
  • Use sticky notes or label cards to place in each dish (with the designated food for that dish).

4. Set plates, silverware, glasses, and napkins on the table. This will create an elegant, cohesive look to your table!

  • If using cloth napkins, try out a fun folding method to really add a fun twist to your table!

5. Viola! You have created an inviting, custom, and elegant tablescape for your event! I am sure this will "wow" your guests.

When hosting, its important to really dive into the senses!

1. Play background music.

  • Having some soft jazz play in the background always sets a relaxing mood for your guests. Or match the music to your gathering's theme, instrumental Christmas music is my favorite.

2. Bake something right before guests arrive to create a warm aroma that smells great too!

  • Don't stress over an intricate recipe, good ole chocolate chip cookies work every time. We enjoy having those ready for clients in our office.

3. Avoid using too much direct lighting. Turn on lamps, light candles, use natural light, or dim overhead lights to create a more inviting scene.

4. Food is always the start of the show at parties! Keep your guests' hunger at bay, and you will surely have a great event.

  • Choose some go-to staples for the "big" food items (entrees, main sides) and try fun, new, and even theme-specific recipes for your "little" items (snacks, secondary sides, desserts).

Lots of spaces to mingle.

Even if you are hosting in a small space, you can find small corners or areas for guests to socialize. Living rooms, basements, and even kitchens with additional space for seating are great options to allow your guests to relax.

Other quick tips to share:

  • Play a fun, theme-specific game.
  • If using a new recipe, spend a little more time prepping to ensure it turns out great.
  • Prep as much as possible ahead of time. Try not to wait until the day of to begin setting up/preparing.
  • Take lots of photos, of everything! I love documenting these special occasions.
  • Use plastic plates rather than paper plates for an elevated look and feel.
  • Use what you have around the house before buying any new decor.
  • Buy flowers from your local grocery store to use as a centerpiece.
  • Wear an apron to really "feel" like you're hosting!
  • Sit back and take it in, hosting doesn't mean not enjoying the gathering too!

I hope this blog will help you as you gather with family and friends. Hosting during the holidays can seem stressful. With the right tools and planning, you can be prepared to host a great event and have fun doing it!
