How Do You Measure Wealth?

How Do You Measure Wealth?

September 19, 2025

Is it based on the kind of car you drive?

The balance in your retirement fund?

Is the amount you tithe every week?

Measuring wealth is entirely subjective to what people put their trust, desire, and pride into. For most, the common standard is simple: money.

Let’s be honest, money is a powerful motivator. We’ve all heard the saying “Everything has a price.” We live in a world that tells us if we just have enough money, we can have it all.

Well, I am here to tell you that, that is not true. It’s a lie. “Having money” is actually not what you ultimately need. The only thing you ultimately need is Jesus Christ.

“Jesus told him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6

Jesus deserves the #1 spot in your life and to be the main motivator for how you live your life. Jesus Himself said, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Money, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. Scripture affirms that often God honors hard work and blesses those who seek Him. It is a privilege to be entrusted with His resources. Moreover, and quite remarkably, how we steward the earthly resources that have been entrusted to us (our time, our skills, and our money), actually dictates the degree wo which we will be entrusted with true riches (that have nothing to do with earthly money) in eternity.

“So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” Luke 16:11

Here’s the point: whether you have $500,000 or $500 million, it all belongs to Christ. It was never truly “yours” to begin with. That’s a humbling thought—and one that we all wrestle with.

So, if my financial wealth isn’t really “mine” to begin, then how do I measure wealth?

Treasures in heaven.

As Matthew 6:19-21 says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

How can I be storing up for myself heavenly treasure this side of eternity?

That’s a question worth pondering and lingering over during your daily quite time. Invite God to reveal to you how He might have you answer that question. We know that, “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it,” as Psalm 24:1 says. I’m not sure we could spend out time here on earth in a better fashion than to spend and be spent for the cause of Christ, and that directly includes how we manage His resources.

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

Heaven’s currency is not measured by the dollars in your wallet.

Money is temporal. It comes and goes, and ultimately it will evaporate. A relationship with Christ, however, is eternal and will last forever.

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36)

Ultimately, wealth is not defined by bank accounts or assets. True wealth is found in eternal riches—gained only through the shed blood of Jesus. What freedom to know that despite our financial situation today, Jesus has true riches waiting for His followers in Heaven. It never has been, nor will it ever be, about how much you can earn; it has been, and always will be, about what Jesus paid.
