Can you believe it’s already March?! Hard to believe we are almost a quarter of the way through the year already. As the excitement of New Year’s resolutions fade, it’s easy for some of our goals—like sticking to a budget— to slip through the cracks. If you started the year with a plan to manage your finances better but life got in the way, you’re not alone. It’s never too late to get back on track!
Here are five practical ways to help you get back to your budgeting goals today.
1. Start with Prayer and Reflection
Before diving into all the numbers, take a moment to seek God’s wisdom and provision. Ask for clarity, self-discipline, and the strength to steward your resources well. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." Starting with prayer helps align your financial goals with God’s will for your life.
2. Take an Honest Financial Inventory
What gets measured gets acted upon. Look at your checking, savings, credit cards, and any outstanding debts. Write down your balances and review your recent spending. This step isn’t about shame or regret — it’s about gaining a clearer understanding of where you are so that you can move forward. This isn’t a step you have to share with everyone, it’s just to give you a well-rounded perspective on your current situation. Being mindful and diligent with this step will better serve you in the future as you budget. "The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty" (Proverbs 21:5).
3. Revisit Your “Why”
Why did you start budgeting in the first place? Was it to get out of debt, save for a home, give more generously, or find financial peace? Reconnecting with your “why” keeps you motivated. Write down your “why” and put it somewhere you will see it every day—maybe it’s on your mirror or in the kitchen. Recognize your “why” as a commitment you’ve made and honor it.
4. Create a Simple Plan
Budgeting doesn’t have to be complicated—the simpler, the better. Think of your budget with a tiered approach: The first and largest tier is for essentials: housing, utilities, food, and transportation. Tier two is for secondary payments such as paying off debt, investing, and giving. Finally, the last tier is for all other “extra” activities such as a vacation fund, entertainment, eating out, new clothes, etc. Budgeting doesn’t mean you don’t get to do anything fun, it just requires you to be more intentional with how you spend your time and money. Rather than making impulse or irrational purchases, you have a planned system for how you steward your hard-earned money. "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans" (Proverbs 16:3). You can find a fillable version of this budget pyramid for you to add your expenses here!

5. Find Accountability and Grace
We were never meant to manage life alone—and that includes our finances. Share your goals with a trusted friend, spouse, or financial advisor who can offer encouragement and accountability. Tools like budgeting apps, a simple spreadsheet, or even the envelope system can also help keep you on track. The key is consistency. If (or when) you make mistakes, extend yourself the same grace God offers you. We will never be perfect with our financial choices, but we can be intentional stewards with what has been entrusted to us.
Getting back on track with your budget takes patience — but you don’t have to do it alone. By taking small, consistent steps and keeping your eyes on God’s plan, you’ll rebuild financial stability and move closer to the life He’s calling you towards. Remember, God’s in control and we are His stewards!
