What Are My Long-Term Care Options?

What Are My Long-Term Care Options?

March 07, 2025

What happens when we can’t do it all anymore? As we age, our lifestyles may become more complicated with different routines, medication, schedules, goals, and daily needs. There may come a day when you can no longer provide the level of care for yourself that you or your family need, and if this is the case, you should consider your long-term care options.

  1. In-Home Care: For many, staying at home is the preferred option. In-home care services provide help with daily activities like meal preparation, dressing, bathing, and medication management. It allows for independence and comfort while receiving personalized care. Costs vary depending on the level of care needed and the hours of support required.
  2. Assisted Living: Assisted living facilities offer a balance between independence and support. Residents live in private or semi-private apartments and receive assistance with daily activities, along with access to social activities, meals, and medical care as needed. Assisted Living works well for those who need some help but still want to maintain an active lifestyle.
  3. Nursing Homes: For those who need round-the-clock medical care and supervision, nursing homes provide a higher level of support. These are ideal for individuals with chronic health conditions or severe mobility issues. Nursing homes offer skilled nursing care, rehabilitation services, and assistance with all daily needs.
  4. Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs): CCRC's are becoming more popular as people look for long-term care options that provide both stability and convenience. These communities offer a tiered approach to care, combining independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care all in one place. This allows residents to transition seamlessly as their needs change, without having to move to a completely new facility. While CCRCs require an upfront investment and ongoing fees, many find value in the built-in community and continuity of care.
