Volunteering in your local community is a great way to give back this holiday season. Your time, talents, and positive attitude are priceless to organizations who rely on volunteers to accomplish their mission. One of our core values at Harvest Point® is faithful generosity. Each quarter, we seek out at least one organization that we can partner with as volunteers. This process has been a wonderful addition to the typical work routine and something that has provided me with a deeper perspective of those in need around me. If you are debating whether or not to volunteer, I have compiled a few (hopefully compelling) reasons for why you should:
1. Positively impacts your overall health.
Studies have found that volunteering is good for both your physical and mental health1. Everyone is always looking for the next best thing to do for you health, and maybe its as simple as thinking "what can I do for someone else?".
2. Meet new people.
Volunteering is an easy way to meet some new faces in your community. Whether you're looking to network, make new friends, or maybe both, volunteering is a great way to bring people together on the sole mission of helping others in your community.
3. Get to know your community better.
Especially if you are new to the area, volunteering is a great way to learn more about the new place you call home. Not only will you merely be more familiar with your community, but you'll have a deeper understanding of the needs of others around you and how you might be in a position to help.
4. Creates a ripple-effect.
Volunteering can create a ripple effect amongst those around you and even for yourself! People who have been served often seek to serve themselves. Kindness creates change in the lives of other and the communities where they belong. Volunteering provides a simple way to choose selflessness and pursue kindness towards others.
Ultimately, the choice to volunteer is totally up to you! Just know that there are all kinds of ways to volunteer and you might be surprised to know how you can use your talents to change the life of another. If you find yourself with some spare time, see if there is an organization that could use your help! If you're not sure where to start, it is always a good practice to check out your local chamber of commerce for volunteer opportunities or ask a co-worker for some suggestions. Happy volunteering!
