Angela's Top Local Restaurants

March 07, 2024

Des Moines is becoming a center of influence for surrounding areas by providing a wide range of options for your dining experience. New restaurants open all of the time ranging between a quick casual to a full sit down elegant experience. Whether it's a family experience, date night, brunch or dinner out with friends, Des Moines has you covered with some excellent choices. Personally, I enjoy the atmosphere of a restaurant just as much as the food that they offer.

Here is a list of my personal favorites:

The Breakfast Club: 212 E 3rd St. Des Moines. There are 2 other locations in the Des Moines metro - West Glen and Ankeny. Fun, upbeat atmosphere with a variety of classic breakfast favorites. Specialty drinks and mimosa flights are tops on my list.

Americana: 1312 Locust St. Des Moines. A great modern dining atmosphere, great views with a Midwest vibe. Their menu centers around modern steakhouse meats and Midwest comfort food served with classic cocktails, local beer and popular wine. It's in the heart of downtown with a view of the Pappajohn Sculpture Park. Excellent brunch buffet on the weekends.

HomeGrown: 555 17th St. Ste. 102 Des Moines. A breakfast, brunch and lunch daytime eatery featuring locally-sourced dishes. Hometown feel with healthy, direct-from-the-source options. Fresh-pressed juices and handmade lattes pair nicely with their homecooked menu.

Destination Grill: 2491 East 1st St. Grimes. A full-service, contemporary restaurant that features meals from exciting locations from around the globe. They have a passion for gourmet cuisine and unique experiences for the entire family to enjoy. The sunset view from their terrace is a must.

Cooper's Hawk: 12801 University Ave. Clive. A wine-driven dining experience inspired by Napa Valley wine country. Each dish is made from scratch, incorporating peak-of-season ingredients and listed with a bin number to guide you to your selection's perfect wine pairing. An upscale setting with a tasting room, bar, patio, and a private party room. A personal 5-star favorite.

Ruth's Chris Steakhouse: 950 Jordan Creek Pkwy. Ste 1100 West Des Moines. A newer restaurant in town and it does not disappoint. A family-owned franchise that will have you in awe of the atmosphere, menu and wine selections. Upscale and fancy night out, or a special occasion place to experience.

Republic on Grand: 401 E Grand Ave Des Moines. On the 6th floor of the AC Hotel, a lounge restaurant with city views and stylish decor. Cocktails, craft beer and global plates are always a good idea for a date night or night out with friends. The view of the Des Moines capital building or fireworks after an iCubs game will make this location one of your favorites.

Wasabi: 9500 University Ave #2101 West Des Moines. This is my go-to sushi restaurant with 3 local locations. Highest quality sushi, Japanese favorite dishes, craft cocktails and wine. Always great service, fast, and a top quality dining experience. Family friendly with a modern upbeat atmosphere.

In my opinion, Des Moines is a honey pot of amazing culinary cuisine. Our city has so much to offer that you really can’t go wrong wherever you decide to go. Enjoy!
