Find Missing Retirement Savings!

Find Missing Retirement Savings!

June 30, 2025

Don't let your hard-earned retirement savings slip through the cracks. If you’ve ever changed careers, there is a chance you may have left an old 401(k) or pension behind without even realizing it. You’re not alone—millions of Americans lose track of retirement accounts during career transitions, and those dollars can easily be overlooked.

Retirement Savings Lost & Found Tool

Thankfully, the U.S. Department of Labor has created a helpful resource: the Retirement Savings Lost & Found tool, found at lostandfound.dol.gov. This free tool helps workers and retirees search for retirement accounts left behind with former employers. It’s like a digital treasure map for your hard-earned savings!

Connecting to Accounts

Once you search your name, the tool will show you potential account matches and provide contact information for the plan administrator. That way, you can reach out directly to claim your benefits, request account transfers, or ask any questions about the funds that may be in your name. It’s important to note that this tool can help find both defined-benefit pension plans and defined-contribution plans, but not individual retirement plans (IRAs).

Especially Useful for Former Private Sector Employees

This tool is especially useful if you worked for a private-sector employer or were part of a union that sponsored a retirement plan. However, if your former employer was a government agency or a religious organization that does not participate in the system, their plans may not appear in the database.

Final Considerations

Finally, it’s important to note that seeing a plan listed under your name doesn’t automatically mean there’s still money waiting for you. The listing simply confirms your past participation in a retirement plan, but any funds may have already been distributed, rolled over to a new account, or converted into an annuity. To confirm if there are remaining funds, you’ll need to contact the plan administrator directly using the details provided in the search results.

If you have more questions about the process for finding lost retirement savings accounts, the Retirement Savings Lost & Found website includes a helpful FAQ section covering common scenarios and answers. It’s a good place to start if you’re unsure what your next steps should be.
