What My Internship at Harvest Point® Taught Me

What My Internship at Harvest Point® Taught Me

July 27, 2026

When I wrapped up my spring semester classes at Iowa State, I thought I knew what to expect from a summer internship in wealth management. I assumed my days would be filled with spreadsheet cells, stock charts, and calculations. I figured success in this industry was filled with numbers. My summer at Harvest Point® Wealth Management completely flipped my perspective. It turns out that textbooks only tell half of the story.

Here is what I learned from my summer behind the scenes.

1. People Over Numbers

The biggest "aha!" moment of my summer happened when I sat in on my first client meeting. I expected a lot of number-crunching right at the table. Instead, it felt much more like a conversation around the dinner table.

Clients didn't just want to talk about percentages; they talked about their lives, their families, their worries, and their dreams. The real skill of an advisor isn’t just knowing the numbers; it’s knowing how to listen to what a client actually needs to feel secure.

2. The Real Work Happens Before the Meeting

Although I worked on countless projects during my time, the most relatable advising experience I had was prepping for client meetings. It was eye-opening to see the amount of thought, effort, and strategy that goes into every single meeting even before the client walks through the door.

The dedication didn't stop when the meeting ended, either. The detailed follow-up process afterward proved to me that comprehensive wealth management is an ongoing, deeply intentional process, not a one-time conversation.

3. Running a Firm Takes Every Corner of the Business

I didn't just sit in an advisory bubble this summer. I was incredibly fortunate to gain hands-on experience in every single sector of the firm:

  • Advising: Learning how to align financial resources with clients' values and goals.
  • Marketing: Witnessing how much effort goes into successfully sharing a company's message. Marketing is everything!
  • Operations: Assisting in the behind-the-scenes efforts that keep the business moving forward.
  • Client Care: Discovering how to make people feel genuinely welcomed and valued.

Working in every corner taught me how to actually run a successful business from top to bottom.

4. Textbooks Come Alive in Real Time

There is a huge difference between studying financial regulations for an exam and seeing how those money and tax rules affect a real person’s financial timeline. This summer, a lot of knowledge from my classes finally clicked. Experiencing the inner workings of the industry in real time bridged the gap between theory and reality, making the concepts permanent.

5. Never Take a Great Team for Granted

Beyond financial knowledge, the biggest lesson I am walking away with is the importance of company culture. Our team had me join them for many fun events where I got to meet some of our clients, prospects, peers, and partners. It was always a highlight getting to go out and spend time in the central Iowa community.

But day-to-day in the office, I realized something: there was no workplace drama. I think this can be overlooked within a business, but it's a major component of a successful firm. I believe that the cohesion of everyone at Harvest Point® is the company’s biggest advantage.

The Harvest Point® team has been endlessly helpful and patient with me throughout this entire internship. I used to take a positive work environment for granted as "the norm", but I now know just how special a supportive team truly is. I feel incredibly blessed to have worked alongside them these past few months.

The Bottom Line

I have gained an immense amount of value from this internship. My only hope as I head back to campus is that I managed to give back even half the value, energy, and dedication that this team poured into me all summer long. I'm looking forward to bringing my real-world experience back into my studies!
